“The Packhorse Inn is the perfect base to explore the magnificient coast and countryside of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders”

North Northumberland, the ‘SecretKingdom’, is still largely undiscovered and yet it’s full of fascinating places to visit, with plenty to do for all the family. Listed below are just a few of the many places to visit during your stay, for more details see Visit Northumberland’s website.

  • The historic market town of Alnwick is a fifteen minute drive away and includes Alnwick Castle, the home of the Duke of Northumberland, is probably even more famous as Harry Potter’s school ‘Hogwarts’. The Alnwick Garden includes the largest water feature and an infamous Poison Garden. Bailiffgate Museum gives a great potted history of Alnwick.
  • On the coast, Bamburgh Castle and the ruinedDunstanburgh Castle present unbelievably spectacular backdrops to the sandy beaches below them.
  • The Northumberland coastline with its offshore islands is a haven for birdwatchers.
  • In nearby Seahouses, there are regular boat trips to the Farne Islands, home of a large colony of seals and the Longstone Lighthouse, the scene of the dramatic rescue by Grace Darling.
  • A twenty minute drive from our pub will take you to Holy Island, where  you will find Lindisfarne Priory, Holy Island castle and the St Aidan’s mead winery.  Holy Island or Lindisfarne is accessible only at low tide so do check the Tide Times before you set off.
  • To the west the Cheviots present lots of options for walking, and the award winning Keilder Forest is reknown for it’s observatory.
  • To the south of the county you will find Hadrian’s Wall, a ‘World Heritage’ site and to the north the Scottish Borders all steeped in history and a reminder of the regions turbulent past.
